The story follows young girl, Lucinda (Luce) Price from her troublesome past to her torturous present as she is enrolled at Sword & Cross Reform School in Savannah. After being accused of the fire that caused the tragic loss of a boy, she had no other option but to go there and make an attempt to rebuild her life. Not long after she is enrolled, Luce finds herself drawn to a handsome, mysterious boy named Daniel, whom she is almost certain she has crossed paths with before their meeting at Sword & Cross. But when another boy, Cam, steps onto the scene, will she be able to decide who she wants and needs more? Will she choose to listen to her head or her heart?
This book is the first in the 'Fallen Series'. I found it to be a thrilling read, I was hooked from the very first page and enjoyed (almost) every moment of reading it. Although this story is an easy read, it is still descriptive and wonderfully written. Lauren Kate has really outdone herself with this book, and I hope the rest of the series follows suit.
Daniel - one of the main protagonists - is initially your typical jock, with a very abrupt and unwelcoming attitude. However, as the book develops, it's difficult not to love his character. Not far into the book, you also meet Arriane, who's your typical crazy lady... with an interesting twist. She can easily make a giggle escape your mouth with some of the things she says. Personally, Daniel and Arriane were definitely my favourite's as they brought so much to the book as a whole. Saying that, I did feel that Luce was easy to relate to with that every day girl next door vibe to her.
As much as I loved the book; I did find it to be fairly predictable. I found myself able to guess a lot of upcoming events in the advancing chapters. That's the reason I cannot rate the book a full 5/5 as I would've preferred more plot twists than what there was. However, everybody's reading experiences are different, and just because I was able to correctly predict the majority of the events it doesn't mean that everybody will be able to. I've read an awful lot of supernatural books in recent years, therefore, I find it easier to predict what happens in that particular genre of books.
This book is definitely aimed at Teens/Young Adults and is directed towards fans of novels about the supernatural and romance. Even if the story content is completely different to that of Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick; I felt as though there were a few similarities here and there. Maybe if you read both books; you'll come to understand why I've said that.
Overall, I rate this book 4/5.
